We have returned from the frozen tundra of Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Grandma managed well flying high on supplemental oxygen (precious and
costly). Several FEET of snow fell in the foothills while we got mostly
cold hard rain. It kept up for 3 days. Shabbat services were held at
Har Shalom in Ft. Collins. Rabbi Jack Gabriel, who spent 10 years there
and who Bar Mitzvahed David came back to do Andrew, also. He describes
himself as "conserva-dox". In reality the congregation is best labeled as
'Renewal"- very spiritual and very interesting and
provoking at the same time. Grandpa Norman sang the kiddush after
service and an oneg was held.
The next morning a large crowd gathered to attend the davening and many
members of the family were called up for honors and special prayers.
Lee Beck read Torah, for the first aliyah! David (alias Woody) read for
the second aliyah and finally the Bar Mitzvah read his own passage.
Andrew's dvar Torah considered the event of Nadav and Abihu and suggested
that although we don't know the precise reason it was an important and
sobering action. His talk was very well delivered as was his entire
involvement in the services. His parents, Susie and Michael were proud and
pleased. Michael who likes to come up with spontaneous nicknames finally
settled on "Mandrew" to note his coming of age.
True to form a luncheon was held and the family gathered to enjoy the
company which included the Lee and Phyllis Beck, Hillary and Michael
Beck-Giffords, Shawn and Eli; Matthew and Joanne with Sara and Stanley,
Joan and Larry Kehl and that irrepressible James who is just 5 years but
has the knowledge and wisdom of 10.
That evening the party was held at the Senior Club in Ft. Collins-
beautiful
and picturesque with a DJ featuring both old and new songs and dances.
A memorable event. We made it home and are looking forward to next weekend
in Toronto to celebrate Shaindy's Bat MitZvah. As we say in Gaelic-"Nur
auf
Simchas".
